Extreme Weather Safety: Typhoons, Heavy Rain, Flooding, Heat & Air Quality

At Horizon International School, student safety and well-being remain our highest priority, regardless of weather conditions. In line with the school’s Health and Safety Policy, Horizon monitors severe weather, including typhoons, heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, flooding, extreme heat, and poor air quality, to ensure that timely decisions are made in the best interest of students, staff, and families.

During typhoons or periods of heavy rain, the school may adjust its daily operations as a safety precaution. Depending on the severity of the weather and guidance from local authorities, this may include modified outdoor activities, indoor supervision, delayed arrival times, early dismissal, or a temporary school closure. When students are already on campus, they remain supervised in safe indoor areas until conditions are suitable for dismissal or parent collection.

Heavy rain may also lead to flooding in surrounding areas, road closures, and traffic disruption. These conditions can affect family travel and may cause delays, re-routing, or temporary suspension of school bus routes. In such cases, Horizon works closely with its transportation provider and campus teams to monitor road conditions and keep students safe until they are collected or able to continue their journey.

Clear and timely communication is essential during extreme weather. Horizon communicates with all stakeholders, especially families, through the school’s established communication channels. Parents are encouraged to keep their contact information updated, check school announcements regularly, and inform the School Office of any changes to pick-up, drop-off, or transportation arrangements.

In cases of extreme heat or poor air quality, outdoor activities may be reduced, rescheduled, moved indoors, or canceled. Students are encouraged to drink water regularly, avoid unnecessary physical exertion, and follow staff guidance. The school continues to monitor conditions throughout the day and adjusts activities to protect student health, comfort, and readiness for learning.

Through careful monitoring, supervised procedures, responsive communication, and a student-centered approach, Horizon aims to ensure that every member of the school community remains safe, informed, and supported during extreme weather conditions.
